Cascade Mountain Oct 2002
(peak 1 - first high peak)

I climbed Cascade with Charlie and his kids for the first time in October 2002. It was a good hike, very cool and VERY windy on the summit.

See Macromedia photo album. (Requires Flash)

Heres Charlie's report of the same trip.

Cascade & Porter Mountains 4 Oct 2003
(Cascade again, Porter is number 5)

Erin and I climbed both Cascade and Porter mountains today. Earlier this week the road to the top of Whiteface was closed due to snow - very early in the season. As you will see by these pictures (requires Flash) we also got snowed on, and it's only early October.

Lessons learned on this trip - Erin's boots aren't water proof. Bring better gloves, and bring an extra set, in case the first set get wet! When ascending the bare summit of any mountain, and you know it's windy and cold, get your warm hat on FIRST. And the extra dry gloves. Rain pants make wonderful gaiters when your splashing in the mud - best investment so far - go Marmot! Even when the weather is bad, expect to share the easy access peaks with others. There were 30 people signed into the trail log after us. Fresh brewed coffee and hot chocolate on the trail on a wet rainy/snowy day is almost like a little piece of heaven.

After doing Giant a couple weeks ago, this was a much easier hike. Not sure if I'm in better condition or if the trail is that much easier.
