Algonquin
and Wright See Macromedia photo album. (Requires Flash) This was my second solo trip. It's only mid October, but as you can see from the photos here, and in the photo album, it's winter on the peaks! (Mouse over the picture to see the image full size.) The morning started crisp and clear, and within 20 minutes I was looking for my shell to keep the snow off my wool sweater. It only snowed for a bit, so the shell was soon back off to stay vented. Encountered a couple other people on the trail, and we leap frogged each other up the trail, all the way to the summit. This little tree was near the summit of Algonquin. It was waiting for some sunshone I think. Ice on the summit was really bad. I stopped and put on some Icers, like creepers. Not really icy enough for crampons yet, but slippery nonetheless. The Icers worked great! I will not hike at this time of year again without them. I originally bought them for fishing on the salmon river. The 2 guys that I kept leap frogging were waiting for me at the summit, so they could take a picture of me, for me. It was a very nice jesture. Cloud cover was pretty thick, but high enough so that you can see the summit of Marcy over my shoulder. I snapped this picture on the way off the summit of Algonquin, some people on their way to the summit. Started encountering more people, many of them not prepared for the winter wonderland above 3000 ft. One lady had socks on her hands, there were several people in sneakers. I made it back down to the trail junction to Wright summit, and stopped and fired up the stove and brewed a cup of coffee. Went down great after the 'brisk' weather on the summit of Algonquin. The trip to the summit of Wright was uneventful, met a couple people coming down, but had the summit to myself. Pictures are in the photo album. Made it back down to the Loj before dark. I am no speed demon, so this is definitely dooable as a day trip. I originally was going to try for Iroquis via Algonquin the same day, but the wind was too strong, and I had not been on the trail before.
